Should I rebuild now? How much $$$ have you spent?
Should I rebuild now? How much $$$ have you spent?
Ok guys, I am at an impasse. I am not sure what I should do. I have a '92 Camaro 5.7l Z28. The car used to be a cop car. It has a lot of the performance add-ons like dual pison brakes, 4 wheel disc, IROC swaybars, wonderbar, SFCs, new shocks, flowmasters, etc. etc. It is a nice looking car, the engine bay is very clean and hasn't needed a whole lot of work. The worst has been a fuel tank swap and I replaced the injectors. I do most of the work myself but the problem I have is this: The car has 215,000 miles on it.
90% of the miles are highway miles. I am not sure but I think that those miles translate differently than city miles when it comes to wear. When I first got the car it had 140,000 miles on it, it used to roar to life when I started it. It is now taking more than a few seconds to start it and I am getting a little smoke out the back when it finally cranks. I don't have any leaks at all. The car actually ran 14.4 @ 95 mph at the track. But I have no idea when the timing chain has been replaced and I don't know what the condition is on most of the engine parts.
I want to get pulleys, remove the smog pump, put timing gears in it, etc. but should I just wait to rebuild the motor?
How much does it cost to rebuild the motor modestly? Maybe bored 30 over with sturdy engine components?
How much did you spend when you had your motor rebuilt and what options did you take?
How much would it cost to go all out and stroke it to a 383 and performance rebuid parts? Would I need a new chip for that?
I know there is a lot of info here and a lot of questions but I am stuck with trying to figure out what to do. I am hoping to glean for your experiences. Thanks!

What part of Georiga are you from?
Rebuilding the engine might be the best best. If you just wanted to do a solid rebuild, nothing really heavy on the performance... but still avoid stock.
Scat Crank - 160
Eagle Ibeam Rods - 210
TRW or something like that pistons - 150
Add in your bearings, gaskets, new timing chain, maybe upgrade to a LT1 cam or something of that nature, and get your heads rebuilt. Maybe less than a 1000 after everything.
You could knock off alot of that price as well by going with stock parts.
383 there will be alot more involved, and the prices will go up.
