Rebuild experiences

Hey everyone, I have a feeling my 155K 350tpi isn't gonna last too long once the paxton goes on. About how much do you think a short block rebuild would cost if I do all the work except bore the cylinders and balancing? What have been your experiences and how much have you spent? I was thinking a kit would be better to order from like enginekits.com but I want forged pistons and gap-less rings. The motor won't see more than 6-7 PSI with alcohol injection. Thanks everybody. -Mike

I noticed when I was picking out the parts for my 350 TPI rebuild, there sure as hell wasn't one particular "magic" kit that had everything I wanted. I finally realized the only way to do it was to pick out the parts I wanted separately. You save a few bucks getting everything in one kit, but is it really worth settling for stuff that you really don't want or trust. Basically your catchall kits work for the average cheesedick, but I figure if you're picky enough to rebuild your own engine, you shoud be equally picky about the parts you use. There's actually some really good kits available for the older pre 86 motors from the "industry leaders" (i.e. Summit, Jegs, etc.), but these same places still seem to refuse to accept the idea that people actually rebuild the newer roller block motors. Gee, I can't imagine anyone needing to rebuild a motor that's 16 years old can you? The most expensive single thing I had done at the machine shop was the balancing, which ran me $175, but I figured it was an important enough finishing touch to make it worth the money. I'm not planning on supercharging mine, but I did go with the Speed Pro plasma moly rings and the Keith Black hyperuetectic pistons for my build up. The extra cost of real forged pistons are probably a good idea for a supercharged motor.
