I just got off the phone with a guy that has 2 black '88 IROC's for sale. They are both complete but one of them has a rod knocking in it and the engine is about shot. I am going to go look at these cars and I have a couple questions. The guy says that they are both 350 TPI engines in the cars. Is there any way to verify this other than looking at the back of the block ? I mean, are there any visual casting numbers that I can look for to determine that they are actually 350's ? I looked through other sites and have seen that if the car has a manual tranny, it's a tell tale sign that it is a 305. (Unless the tranny has been swapped) Are there any other "signs" that might tell what size engine it is ? ie. VIN ?

The only place I know to look besides that is on the side. You'll have to jack it up a little to bit to get under it, but there should be a 3 digit number which is actually the last 3 digits on the block casting number. And then compare to this site.

Look at the VIN# on the dash. If the 8th # on the VIN is the #8, then it is a 350. Any other # or letter, it is a 305.
