Newbie question
I have an 87 Formula with TPI and a 5 speed. I am having a couple problems with drivability. First the car dies when I come to a stop, or even when I push in the clutch while coasting. I installed a new Idle Air Control Valve and it seems to have taken care of this problem. Now for the second issue. When I first start the car at the beginning of the day it fires right off but then seems to load up with gas. If I give it throttle it seems to clear out and run OK, but then every other time durring the day when I want to start the car I have to push the throttle to the floor and then turn the key to start it, if I dont push the throttle to the floor to start it it wont start. If I do that and then push the throttle to the floor it will start, but it will be really loaded up, and smoke really bad. Also when I bought this car I put a tune up on it. In the process I noticed that someone had unpluged the wire to the cold start injector. I plugged it back in but it seems to make no difference. Any help is greatly appriceated.
Thank You

Do you have a fuel pressure guage? If so, attach it to the scrader valve on the fuel rail. You don't have to start the car, just turn the key to run. The pressure guage should climb to about 42 PSI with the key in the 'run' position. Now, shut the key off and watch that guage. If it holds pressure, great. If not, and the pressure falls quickly, you most likely have leaking or stuck open injectors. My '89 TPI had the same smoking problems you described until I found my injectors were crap.
