TPI on a carb build up?
TPI on a carb build up?
I recently moved to college so as it stands my beautiful camaro sits in my fathers garage. He decided that he is going to build a new engine for my 92 rs, replacing little old L03 resting under the hood. I have done a little researching and have found about the right combo, part for part, that i am going to need to build this engine. My only problem is that the engine build up is deigned to have a carb sitting on top of it. The engine i plan to build is a 383 ci which is tested to produce 450 hp and 480 ftlbs. The Spec sheet calls for a 750 cfm carb to be used though. Will changing the intake system to injected hurt the performance gains? Can anyone help me figure out what are some opions pf what i could do.
( the engine build up shoud be at www.Chevyhiperformance.com
It is in the 7 hot engine combo link... once on the like go to " punk rock mouse" and you will be able to see the exact parts to be used)
thank you

You won't even get close to those power numbers with a TPI setup. Even if it was fully modified you'd still peak out too low for that motor combo. The build up calls for a minimum of a Victor Jr. intake (smallest and lowest revving one listed) and those flow about 275 cfm per runner. Those numbers happen to match the large cylinder heads that are recommended, and the cams will not work with an LTR (long tube runner) setup. Stock TPI flows 198 cfm per runner and will make max power at around 4800 rpm. In order to get the flow and revving ability to feed that motor you would need a Holley Stealth Ram which also flows 275 cfm per runner. A fully extrude honed Accel high- flo intake and runners would get you 266 cfm but would still peak below the potential of the proposed motor. The muzak mouse motor would be better suited to TPI with its short duration cam and smaller cylinder heads. I am in no way suggesting that LTR setups can't make good power because plenty of members are having success with them. They just have much smaller cams and heads than your proposed motor does.

It can help it out more or hurt you more just depends on how its tuned but heres my suggestions with the list below that you supplied....
1)Aluminum AFR's would be great for some type of MPI
2)Cran Powermax would be alot more computer friendley when you get into buy or burning chips
3)Any of the three exhaust would be good in the combo 3inch
Conclusion: With the right intake and tuning you could make great power with an "easy" 450 hp potential and still have drivability with fuel economy. Many people on here have a 383 FI setup and they will eventually reply to this and let you know what they have and what it does. Good Luck

Then what type of fuel injection would be of use to me then, if any, to make that kind of power. If i have to, im not super opposed to a carb, but am more woried about compatibility. In either case what kind of computer and or fuel problems would i encounter. If i switched over to carb... would extensive changes have to be made?

You have a throttle body car, right? It could be very expensive for you to swap to a port style injection. Throttle body cars run a fuel pressure that is only slightly higher than a carb's. You could buy an inexpensive fuel pressure regulator with a good intake and carb for a fraction of what it would cost to stay fuel injected. I have a lot of money in my fuel injection setup (over $1600) and I had TPI to start with. If I could do it all over again, I would have a Victor Jr. and a Speed Demon on it for a 1/3 of what my current intake setup cost. The performance would be as good or better. Ultimately the choice is up to you as for which way you decide to go, but if you have a TB car I'd definitely go carb.

Gixxer is right. Its just what you want to invest and what kind of reliability that you want. Are you on a budget? Gixxer what kind of numbers are you putting down? What kid of track times are you getting with the ZZ4 setup?

Bri, I am still waiting on my AN fuel line kit to finish the installation of my stealthram. Checkout the thread I started called miniram vs. stealthram. The only numbers I have are with an Edelbrock high-flo base and stock runners and plenum. The best times that I got with that setup was 13.6-7's at about 105 mph. I could pull on my friends six speed LS1 until about third gear until he would start to run me down. Obviously my components are way too much for a LTR setup, but when I put the motor together I was planning on a miniram. As soon as my line kit comes in, I'll be going to Byron dragway in Byron, Ill to get my new times.
