Our cars computer utilizes a chip or prom. One can buy the equipment necessary to edit what is on that chip... this is called prom burning or tuning. Stock cars benefit from it. Modded cars benefit more. At a certain point of modification - you NEED a custom tune.
There is an awesome tech article on beginning to burn your own chips. If you don't want to learn there are two companies that do good tuning as far as I know - fastchip and pcmforless.
Whatever you do, don't get an off the shelf chip. fastchip and pcmforless both take into account your actual car, and garner real results.
