K - Im stuck - Fuel pump prob?
K - Im stuck - Fuel pump prob?
88 IROC 5.7 TPI
After jumping the car and letting it run for about an hour, sut it off and restarted it.
I drove it out to the front yard and shut it down till later that day. Battery didnt charge enough and I had to jump it again (got a new battery in it now). Anyway, it fired up and when I tried to move it, it bogged down and died. Fired it up again and it did the same thing. I have not been able to fire it up again since.
- I tried different relays from my other 88 IROC and I could not get this thing fired up.
- Checked the fuel pressure and there was no fuel in the fuel rail.
- Added some gas to the tank in case the gauge was wrong.
Does anyone know what tests I can run to see if this fuel pump is working - I am not interested in pulling down a tank and replacing a fuel pump that is good.
I have done some searches on the tech boards and I cannot find the right search criteria that works.

I don't blame you, a fuel pump swap is a total PITA. Have someone hang out behind your car by the tank and listen as you switch the key to on, like where you'd put it to roll your windows up w/o starting the car. The fuel pump should prime the lines by turning on for a few seconds every time you do this and it will be easy to hear. If this doesn't happen, you know something is wrong, but this still wouldn't rule out the pump being ok, it'd just verify that it isn't coming on when it should. I have a FI fuel pump diagnosis list at home I'll post later if it has any info that hasn't already been contributed by that time...
That would be kool - I have already done the basics - switching the key on and listening for the pump.
I am hoping there is some way to bypass the fuel presure switch to rule that out or manually feeding a 12 volt supply to the pump and see if it comes on.

Take a 12 volt battery and apply the positve side to pin "G" of the ALDL and the negative side to pin "A" of the ALDL. If the pump is good you will hear it running. You could also check your fuel pump relay, it is mounted on the driver side firewall.

Yes, I eventually had to go to the connector above the differential where the fuel pump plugs into the main harness. I checked it there and I had ground, 7 Volts and 12 Volts in each of the 3 pins. So I know I had power.
Plugged the old pump into a 12 volt supply and it didnt spin. I just hate doing a job that big to find out it wasnt the problem.
