Harmonic balancer differences?

I am looking at buying a new harmonic balancer and I am really confused. I am building a 383 that is going to be externally balanced. I see the 6 3/4" and the 8" version. I am not looking for a really high horsepower application, just a pretty simple replacement, but I dont know what to look for. Would the 6 3/4" one be better since it is lighter and wouldn't take as much to turn on a lower hp motor or would be 8" be better since it would balance out better with it's size and the weight of the crank. What I am going to be doing is running a Scat 9000 crank with a T5 behind it. Any help on this would be wonderful. Thanks.

The 8" will provide more dampening action while needing more chassis & accessory clearance.

So if I am going to be running the factory serpentine system will it clear that? Are my thoughts on the smaller balancer taking less force to turn it, which in turn is going to free up hp right or is it completely off?

If you're using an external balanced Scat ONE PIECE rear seal crank then your going to need a 8" 400 balancer and the weighted 3" bolt pattern new style flywheel. Have them balanced together with the other internal parts.

It's possible there's a smaller 400 style dampner but I haven't seen one.

Could you please elaborate more on the flywheel. I was told that the flywheel that I am using currently would work just fine. The only thing is that I am going to need to pull it out and have it balanced with the new motor. I have a one piece rear main in there now.

If you already have a manual tranny then that should be the correct flywheel.

That's a good idea to send it with the other parts for balancing.
