Serious HI-Performance ?
im posting this for somebody, any help is appreciated...
here is the thread for a little more information http://www.fbody.com/cgi-bin/anythin...i?msgid=551266
thanks again.
First off sorry for posting this here, but I know I'll get the best response. Also this will be long.
I'm having problems tuning my Iroc. Heres the major Stats: 383 TPI, all after market intake Edelbrock, Plenum ported, B&k 58mil throttle body, 10-5-1 compression,Edelbrock Performer heads 160/202,Comp hydro cam 510-540 lift with cam stop cam has 3 positions I set it in the middle,1:6 roller rockers, double roller chain, 25# Ford injectors set at 40lbs,adj. fuel regulator, hi-performance fuel pump, 1 5/8 Edelbrock headers with y pipe, stock ecm with hypertech 2 chip,MSD distributor,MSD coil,Bosh platinum plugs for aluninum heads,MSD wires,no egr, punched out cat,160 amp altinator.
I dissconnect the ecm tan/black pigtail connector. Start the engine up and let it warm up. Get the timing in at 10 degrees advance, and shut it off. Then I ground the (aldl) ecm terminal. Let the IAC run for about 30 seconds ignition on only. THen I unplug it and start the car up, and set the Idle at 800-900 rpm, disconnect the (aldl) ground. At this point everything is fine. Then I'll shut it off reconnect the ecm (tan wire/pigtail connector), reconnect IAC,and tighten down the distributor, pull fuse #1 for a minute, and start it back up. I let the computer relearn it self for a couple of minutes at idle. But then the rpms drop to about 500 and seems to want to die. I try to raise the rpms at the idle screw but it gets very touchy were it wants to race up to 1200-1500rpm, or if I adjust the other way to lower it it will be to much were it wants to die. THe engine also over heats I'm assuming because of the hi-performance additions and that its sitting in park with the high idle and timing being played with. Cooling fan is on constant by pass. JUst when I seem to be getting somewere I have to turn the car off to let it cool down. When I try to start it back up it is difficult to turn over. And will backfire through the exhuast. While struggling at 500-600rpms til it warms up. Or if I adjust the idle doesn't seem to adjust very well and will race to 1200-1500rpms. Also the timing retards to 0-5 degrees advance and fluctuates. Is the ecm screwed up or can't handle this engine?

The only hint I got was it's 'hard to turnover after it's hot'.
That makes me think the base timing may be too far advanced for some reason.
Any chance the balancer has slipped OR the timing tab is not correct for this application?
That could cause the base timing to be too far advanced HOWEVER engines usually idle faster and better WITH advanced timing sooooo.....I don't know.
The idle speed change is also troubling. Vacumn leak?
Good luck with it.
OH, it shouldn't be making THAT much heat at idle...
Some malfunction in the cooling system?
