Engine: 305v8 carburetted

I've got an 85 transam which is carburetted. And a friend of mine who also has an 85 transam has a TPI. Was this down to factory production based on either new product engine coming on-line, what was available at the time in 1985 or what the dealer requested ?

The 305 TPI engine was a extra cost Option for additional $745 over the base engine which you have.
