Budget L98 - LT1 cam?
Has anyone run a stock LT1 cam in a stock-head L98? Is it really any better? Make more torque? The time and effort it takes to do the swap isn't a factor, as the engine is on a stand and disassembled anyway. I just want as much torque as I can get, as cheap as I can get it. And stock LT1 cams are dirt cheap.

I just bought an LT1 cam to replace the peanut cam in my 305 TPI. The more agressive cam in the "HO" 305TPI puts out 220hp and like 235HP in the L98 (its the exact same cam between the two, well it was in '88). When I was comparing cam specs, the LT1 cam and L98 cam actually look fairly similar. I don't know if it would be any noticeable increase. In my case, I'll notice a lot because I have a crappy cam to begin with, and I'm going to need the upper RPM power with my LT1 intake conversion.
In a word, I'd say no, its not worth it in your case, even for $40 shipped (how much I paid for mine). Spend money on a better cam.

I was running the TPIS LT1 'Hot Cam' in my Hi-Po 350. It has some good pull out of the corners.
It all depends on what you're going to do with the car. You want something to get moving down the quarter mile or like me, road racing for 30 minutes at a time, three or four times in a day.

The situation is this: I'm building an engine to go in my Jeep and don't have a cam yet. I can get a stock LT1 cam from a guy for $25. Or I can spend more money and get something better. I'm basically just trying to figure out if it's worth spending the extra money. The TPI setup is all stock parts, gasket matched to a Fel-Pro intake set. I'm also using iron L98 heads matched to the same gaskets (that's all the port-work I'm doing.) It's not going to be a powerhouse at all....just a hill-climbing toy with some torque, and a backup vehicle to drive to work next time I tear the RS apart.
Anyway, thanks for the comments....I'll put the guy off for another day or 2 and see if anyone else responds. If noone has anything bad to say, I'll probably go with it just because the price is right.
