Fuel pump noise, anyone?

Thought I'd post this here....

I replaced my in-tank assisting pump from the LG4 with a high pressure TPI pump recently. Pump runs fine, you can hear the humming, but along with that it makes like a suction noise of sorts. It's audible outside and inside the car. I've never heard an in-tank pump do this. Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be? I'd REALLY prefer not to pull my tank out again if at all possible ....having said that, I'll probly have to. Any ideas? I used a stock 'sock' filter on the pump. Oh ya, and the tank is plenty full.

Bare with me for a moment here...
What do you mean by 'bad one', how would it be bad. It does pump fuel, although I haven't had a pressure gauge on the rails yet. I can actually hear the fuel running through the rails though, which I thought was odd. Sounded like...like running water. Weird, dunno, maybe fuel rails are like that, you can hear the fuel running through them. Would you elaborate on your experiences?

My guess is some of the fluid volume is leaking from the supply line in the tank, causing the noises that you describe. Pull the tank back out, pull off the lid, and make sure the seals are seated properly.

I should also note, I did drain the tank with the high pressure pump, into a gas can, through the 3/8" line. It didn't exactly spray the fuel out, kinda poured. I expected it to flow faster than it did. It's rated at a pretty high flow rate, I can't remember exactly what it was. Maybe that's all the faster it flowed, but when 'plugged' builds up quite a bit of pressure behind it. Dunno.

Matlock,
Ya I thought of that too. I thought maybe the rubber line burst or something, but the supplied rubber line was pretty durable, and I clamped those babies down pretty good so I don't know how it could be. I guess I'll pull it out this weekend and see. I'm just stumped as to what's going on here...

I see. Thanks. I think I'll just take it back this weekend and get another and try it out. I dug out the receipt for it just now, I'm glad I found it

I don't know why I just thought of this but...
It's kinda funny, the guy at Autozone dropped the pump at the counter when we were looking at it (comparing it to the LG4 assist pump), he said he would grab another, he went to the back supposedly to get another, came back with it, I took it and paid for it. But I think it was the same one, I think there was some way I could tell like it wasn't in the bag or something (It's been a while since I bought it, nearly 3 months ago and it's been sitting ready to be put in), I don't know, I didn't think twice about it. Now that I remember that, I wonder if that had anything to do with it.

I dont think you should be able to hear the fuel flowing like running water. Something isnt right. It sounds to me like the pump is defective. Personally I never buy anything from AZ. My personal preference. I worked for Checker for over a year and many of our parts were much better quality. Why didnt you just buy a GM pump? Better quality although it costs more. You could go with a walbro as well. People seem to like them. Sucks having to drop the tank again. At least it should go quicker now that you have done it once already.

I don't think that is normal either. And I know what you mean by not wanting to buy from AZ, I feel guilty every time I go in there. But, they are very close and I'm always in there for small stuff like oil, wax, filters, what have you. I went with the Master pump because of price, and I think it still had a lifetime warranty.
I'm becoming a pro at dropping fuel tank, but that doesn't mean it's my favorite thing to do (considering the car is 2.5 hours away at my parents house and I have such little time to work on what needs done as it is).

A rediscription of how it sounds (I'm not too keen on describing senses): sounds like when you turn on a garden house and there is air in the line and it is spraying but has 'air pockets' that make it go 'pssssssssst pst pst psst psssssssssst', only think of that sound if you can inside a fuel rail and instead of spraying, flowing, like a gurgling sound.

:lala:
HAHA, wow

At any rate, there is a noticeable sound coming from the rails, and I don't think it's right.

External fuel pump

If you can learn to live with the noise of the fuel pump, you could remove the defective pump and add an external pump. One advantage to an external pump is you will not ever have to drop your tank again unless it rusts out on you.

Nope, not happening. The pump is brand new. I'll be taking it out this weekend and exchanging it.
