MAT sensor in the plenum? Where else?
Hey guys, gals, I have a TPI setup from an 86 T/A. The MAT (manifold air temp) is in the bottom of the plenum correct? Kinda way in the back. It seems like I read somewhere that if you moved the MAT sensor further upstream, this would help performance. Is this true? I assume it would give a cooler signal to the ECM and therefore it would think that the air is more dense???
If you can move the sensor upstream, where would I go upon installing it? In the rubber intake hose before or after the MAF sensor?
Please excuse me for posting this when it may have already been posted somewhere else. I did a search and found nothing. If anything, give me a link and delete if nessisary.
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME!!!!

I relocated the MAT on my '86 TPI. Actually, I left the original in place and installed a second one in the intake duct. Same effect, but I can unplug/plug in either one for comparison. There is no apparent, obvious difference. After having done this "mod", then digging into the binary files that actually use the data and control fuel and spark, it is apparent that the MAT on these early MAF cars has very little influence on either fuel or spark. The speed/density systems rely on the sensor a bit more to to supplement the MAP and thereby infer a density altitude and adjust fuel, but our cars seem to get no benefit from the "mod".
If you are still willing to experiment, you can try this:

The MAT on the MAF cars will control the EGR enable temperature, and if relocated will alter when the EGR comes on.
