How good are stock TPI 350 heads. I want to upgrade from open chamber 2.02/1.6 heads
Hi guys, I have a 327 with a Holley Stealth Ram on it. The car is currently running 14.40-14.60 in the 1/4 mile with an average of 98.5 mph carbed, 97.5 mph Stealth Rammed (I'm using a restrictive intake duct w/ the stealth ram that I have to correct). The current cylinder heads are 1971-72 350 high output "487X" heads, which have big open chambers and 2.02/1.6 valves. These heads supposedly flow well but give me only 8.5:1 compression with the KB Hypereutectic flat top pistons in the motor now. I can run 38-39 degrees total timing (I burn chips) with absoultely no knock retard, so these heads are obviously not promoting very fast burn. I also have pretty soft low end power -- I'm guessing that the 2.02/1.6 valve size is probably more than I need with this engine. I'm shifting this motor at 6100-6300 -- its pretty well cammed (I have no idea what specs but its pretty significant), but it's low compression at the same time. The bottom line is I'd like to bring this up to 9.5:1 compression, going with closed chamber heads w/ better chamber geometry. Would 350 TPI heads (specifically the 14101083 casting # iron heads -- these are the 1.94/1.5 valved 64cc heads), maybe lightly ported and gasket matched, be a good choice for my 327, considering that I'll be running around a 500 lift cam and shifting as high as 6300 rpms? This car should run solid 13s when I get it set up properly, I don't need to go any faster than that, so I figured the 350 TPI heads, on my smaller displacement motor (shorter stroke is less taxing on the heads flow), would be fine.

Anybody? I'm going to pick the heads up tomorrow morning, they seem like they should be fine supporting 6k+ rpms on my motor since it's shorter stroke than a 350 by quite a bit.

Just redid my heads on the 88. I'd say they are about a perfect replacement for the old 327/300 heads, with hard seats. Should work fine for you with some port smoothing/polishing.

If your getting them cheap then yeah, they sound like a good upgrade to me. I would'nt pay more than $100 dollars for them though if they're just cores, and probably not more than a couple hundred if they're rebuilt.
