So these heads are able to intake all that the engine can physically pull in. Why then would you need to port the heads or have bigger intake ports and valves?
Short answer: Engines work in a vacuum (without an SC or turbo anyway). Every part in the intake path creates resistance and a pressure drop results from the resistance on the air. Porting/polishing, better heads, better intakes, etc all help reduce the resistance and help to drop the resulting vacumm pressure somewhere closer to ambient. More air pressure = more HP.
