ecm/injector advice for 350 with vortec tpi
Hello! I'm really a novice at this stuff and need help.
I would like some advice before I go spending money. I have a Fiero that had a 305 TPI installed a couple years ago. The TPI was setup like a '91 camaro with map and a 730 ecm. That engine ran fine.
I have just finished replacing the engine with a 350 that has a SDPC vortec base. I put all the 305 TPI stuff back on just like it was.
The engine starts and runs, but runs terribly. I have the timing set to 8 deg advanced but the engine acts like the timing is set way too low. It is sluggish and has very poor response. It actually runs better when i set the timing to about 35 deg advanced?? Also, my scanner reports the air/fuel ratio as ok, but my headers start to glow after just a few minutes of idling. My mechanic tells me that this is a sign of a lean mixture.
Are these symptoms typical of mismatched engine and computer?
Has anyone here done a swap like this? What size of injectors and what prom did you use after the swap? I would appreciate any advice how to get this new engine up and running well. This is my first swap so I'm not sure really what to do. My car is a daily driver, so I am not looking for maximum racing performance.
If you need any details of my swap I can answer, I'm very familiar now with how it is setup.
Thanks!

The stock 19 lb/hr injectors are not going to supplynearly enough fuel, and neither is a stock 305 chip in the ECM. That's why it's so lean. I'd recommend a chip swap, and larger injectors (probably 22 or 24 lb/hr).

Does your TDC mark on your balancer match the point where the Piston is at TDC (balancer has not slipped)... also does the timing pointer match the TDC mark when the piston is indeed at TDC?
I've heard of it done a few times, and the person who did it couldn't figure out what was wrong.
