TPI swap questions
TPI swap questions
Hey guys, i have a 85 blazer CCC ,,with a new 350 crate motor in it,,, and the CCC system just is not working out for me too well, im wanting to go with the 90-92 TPI system ,,from a car. I have some questions,,,
First off, its a California truck, with all the smog stuff, etc etc, and it requires a smog referee, to approve the system from the new 90-92 TPI stuff.
How much should i expect to pay for the system? A COMPLETE TPI system from a running car in good condition. ???
Also, do i need to go with the TPI system from a Ca car? For emissions purposes?
Also, what sort of power gain will i get over the old CCC system?
Any tips or what -not would be appreciated greatly, as i only know one other guy who managed to pull off the swap for a system from a 90-92, to go into a full size K5 blazer.
Thanks guys

I must say i do not know what a ccc system is? California-controled-carb/ Ca-cumputer-control. Big brother is watching us all.lol . The tpi swap has been done alot. Make sure it fits your heads,86 and up i believe. My 84 sub was still carb, easy smog ajustable.
Yeah , CCC= computer controlled carb lol . It can be done legally and has been, but, you have to get a referee at a smog station to approve the plans first. The rule is, you can go UP in year ,(as far as fuel delivery goes) but not down in year.
I just dont know what to do all that much, its a little over my head to say the least.

I don't think that the California cars would have had much more than most TPI vehicles, less the AIR injection system.
Basically rig the vehicle up with a charcoal canister, and the AIR system, leave the EGR be, and you've got most of the emissions systems covered right there.
Shouldn't be too terribly tough to accomplish at all

It is a project. the ref is the lest of it. You will need the compleat smog of the doner car. Compleat. The new motor will help you pass by runing clean. Dont be overwhelmed. Any (GM sport salvage) recking yard can set you up 100%. Thats in (408) nice web site though. There are meny others more than willing to sell a kit. yea 80"s right you allready have the air and the cats right?

I'd almost suggest going for an aftermarket california smog legal system. I know I got nickle and dimed to death on my TPI. Still only about 900 US in it, but convert that to Canadian, and that number is suddenly more like 1200.
Your very best option is to buy yourself a complete, running TPI car, that has not had any of it's emissions systems removed. Otherwise, you are constantly gonna be needing little parts here and there that are gonna cost you a bundle.
No doubt about it, TPI is a huge step up from those troublesome CCC carbs, you'll love the huge low end torque for sure! Since you've got a 4x4 like me, the 4800 - 5000 rpm limit isn't such a big deal, unless you like to play in the mud a whole lot
But yeah, either find yourself a complete parts car, or go with an aftermarket EFI system

Hmm, that is a lot more than I would have expected. I was thinking they were closer to 1000 - 1200 or so. If thats the case, tuned port is definitely your best bet (I never really looked into the aftermarket injection systems too closely, I had my heart set on tuned port from the start
)
If you have any questions about swapping the TPI into one of our trucks, gimme a shout. I made my harness from scratch, and I can help you intergrate it into your truck pretty cleanly

I've got a NBS as well, and I can't think of much you'll have issues with. If you keep the same transmission, then your DRAC will keep your ABS and your dash happy. Just make sure that you use the same sending units that your truck already has for the gauges, and they'll read accurately.
If I recall correctly, you can use most of your factory TBI harness as is. You should only really need to add or remove a few wires / connectors, and use the TPI ECM / intake / electronics up front.
There is a small 88+ truck section on http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard but there isn't a huge following, and I'm not aware of any tuned port swaps that have happened there. Just compare the TBI and the TPI wiring harnesses, you'll see the similarities pretty quick
