Check this out, went over to a buddies to visit. I go out to fire up the jeep (tpi motor)...no start and very rich. Try for a couple of minutes and no luck. I pull the fuel pump fuse and it fires up but eventually quits (fuse still out). Put the fuse back in and won't start. Pull the fuse starts running again and while its running i try putting the fuse back in, quits. Well in order to get home I rig up a switch to turn my pump on and off. My buddy follows me and down the road he said he could tell when I hit the swich because of the black smoke. Well about three miles of this and it takes off and is good to go. I have no codes at all. What do you all think.

I'm thinking the regulator but he seems like it would start and run somewhat, it wanted to try and start but you could literally see black smoke coming out of the exhaust when I was try to start it.

 

If you replace the vacuum line going to the regulator with a clear piece of vacuum line, you'll be able to see if its leaking or not. My guess would be an injector stuck open, flooding the cylinder. Be carefull with this, because I have seen enough fuel get into a cylinder to hydrolock it. Liquid does not compress and damage may result.

 

Simply pulling the vacuum line off, and smelling it, would tell if the diaphram is leaking. You can smell the fuel.

 

Thanks for the replies guys. I've questioned my regulator for a long time, and I've always smelled a hint of fuel. I new holley adjustable is on the way, I've wanted for a long time so this was a good enough reason. The injector would make a lot of sense, I was at idle for over a minute before I shut down. I think I will buy some injector cleaner for it, I planned on changing my fuel filter so now would be a good time. Btw it fired right up today with no problem.
