Timing question
Im putting my engine back together and have a question on timing. When the mark on the crank gear and cam gear line up does that mean the number 1 is at tdc. I bought a tdc finder bet when the pistion stops the 2 marks on the crank and cam gears do not line up. just want to get this figured out before i get it all together.
THANKS a lot.

So if I keep it at that spot and set the distributer to #6 I will have the correct timing. Any other help on setting timing would be great.
THANKS a lot.

Yes. I've done several GM V8's and after aligning the timing marks and installing the distributor at #1 it always backfired. Pulling #1 plug and putting at TDC compression stroke I was 180 off. I couldn't believe I was making that big of a mistake. If you read a MOTORS manual on the GM timing chain it says it's at TDC #6. It was a surprise to me. What I like to do is, if the dist doesn't drop all the way, is take a long screwdriver and turn the oil pump until the dist drops all the way and is pointing to #1 (or #6 if you want to keep the marks aligned) on the cap. I don't like to crank the engine to fully install the dist. If that helps.
