1989 Formula TPI starting problem.
Hi, I have a 1989 Formula 350 that is in excellent condition except one problem I am having with it. After sitting for long period of time it will start
right up. If you shut it off before it goes into closed loop and try starting it again it won't start. I can take the hose off throttle body and spray starting fluid in it and it will start. The car has a new fuel pump, fuel filter, and sparkplugs. After it starts it will run fine but if you shut it off before reaching closed loop it won't restart with out the starting fluid. The fuel pump relay is working and I have 40 psi of fuel pressure at the rail even when it won't start.
Any help on this will be appreciated very much. I have changed chips and
computers but still have the same problem. Injectors have been cleaned also.
Thanks, Buck

Buck,
A common GM problem is the starter solenoid getting hot and not letting the starter engage after it is hot. Therefore it needs to be replaced. Are you getting any trouble codes from the computer?? Sometimes the battery cables could be coroded at the battery or the starter.
Hope this helps

Hi, Starter turns motor over fine, it just won't start until I spray a little starting fluid in the throttle bores. No codes. New battery. Thanks, Buck

The only other thing could be that it is not getting enough fuel to start. The ECM is suppose to add a little extra fuel to start on the 1989 and up cars. Sometimes there is a prom issue, but you indicated it was changed The standard fuel pressure is 43psi, if you only have 40, I think that could be your issue. Best of luck!!!
