I'm gonna buy a F-Body this week, but wich one would you choose?
Hello,
I'm in a dilema right now... I wan't to buy a F-Body in Canada under 6000$ (canadian). I have 3 choices right now and I don't know wich one to choose so I need your vote...
1- 1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z, bright red, 350 TPI, hard-top and every options. I don't know the mileage right now but it looks good. 6500$ OBO
2- 1988 Pontiac Trans Am GTA, cheap black paint (was bright red originally), 60 000 original miles, 305 TPI, automatic, 3.73 (he still have the original 3.27 rear end), T-Top, IROC wheels because he bent the original GTA ones but they came with the car and every options... The interior is showing wear especially on the drive side the leather is ripped off. Not all the lights in the digital dash works and it needs a tune up badly since it's been sitting for a while. 4500$ firm
3-1987 Pontiac Trans Am GTA, white, 305 TPI, 5 speed manual, 80 000 original miles and every options too. This is is all original and unmodified. 5500$ OBO
The only one I have seen is the black one. But the manual one is interesting if it is in good shape.
What do you think?

I have listed an 88 IROCZ 28 - 107,000 FOR $4750. Paint job is excellent just done in 2002 - front seats need work or replaced, everythiing is great.
It is listed in the web site - FOR SALE 1988 IROC - PLEASE TAKE A LOOK

I'd stay away from the 88, too much money for a cheap paint job and beat up interior.
On the 86 I'd want proof of the 350 motor. 350's were not offered untill 87, I'm not saying somebody didn't swap one in, only that you should be sure of what your getting, plus it's a bit pricey for an 86, for that kind of money it better look showroom.
I'd check out the 87 and see if the guy will come down on the price.

The 350TPI was not let out the door by GM until 1987. There were some made in 86 yes but they were never released, only used as test cars. Check the vin. Its either an LG4, LB9, or possibly but highly unlikely an L69. Unless the guy droped in a 350 TPI later down the road. Dont get riped off!

I vote for the 5-Speed with TPI!!! unless you have to do a lot of stop and go driving. They are way more fun to drive than the automatics are.

Keep in mind these are Canadian prices...
The 86 Camaro is hard-top, I'll ask if he swapped the engine in... On the photos, I can clearly see it's a TPI. It looks very good on photos.
The white GTA with a 305 TPI, 5 speeds manuals look all original and clean. This one is so interesting but I'm waiting for the guy to call me back.
I owned a 88 GTA, 305 TPI and automatic transmission. Do you think the manual one will be faster?

i would go for the iroc b/c i like camaro's better than the pontiac's but i do like gta's and i would rather have the manual so if the gta is in good shape and all original untouched i would go with that but keep in mind you will have some repairs to do to it once you get it.

I just talked with guy selling the 88 white GTA with a manual transmission.
He says the 4 tires are pretty worn out but should be good for another summer... Their's some bubble on 1 rear fender and where you put fuel in so maybe their's rust under... the paint on the rear wing is cracked. One of the wheel have some scratches but no bend. The weatherstrip for the doors are cracked a little but no water is getting inside anywhere except a couple of drop when under pressure in a car wash.
Beside that, the engine doesn't burn any oil, even when you start it, the shift are very smoth (clutch already been replaced in the past), all glass intact, their's a MP3 CD player... He also says it got 3.45 rear in it!
The RPO sticker isn't there so we couldn't verify it was a real GTA or not... He has the GTA steering wheel with no radio control on it... It has the regular dash, not digital. It is written GTA on the dash pocket. The wheel got gold bird emblem instead of WS6 performance suspension... He alsi says the car doesn't have AC and power steats. Bizard eh?
The car is 5500$ Canadian and it's negotiable.
I think I'll offer him 4000$.
What do you think about all this?

get the numbers off the engine block of the IROC and check to make sure it is infact a 350 that had been swapped in, and not just an LB9 305 because they do look visually identical. the manual GTA sounds interesting but i'm not a big fan of rust. i think either way i'd go with the IROC

The floor always received an anti-rust coating every year so it's pretty much perfect. Like I said, only a couple of bubble on one of the rear fender and near where you put fuel in (behind the door, not visible otherwise).

I just talked to the guy with the 86 Camaro... Well, it's a base V6 that received everything from a 89 IROC-Z. 350 TPI, transmission, rear, computer, wiring, suspension, wheels etc... It is really well done.
The guy came down on the price. It was 6500$ canadian and now, after a couple of hours of negotiation, he'll deliver it to my door for 3200$ canadia. Take a look there: car pictures and photos at CarDomain.com

The motor is certainly an 89 or newer. It looks to me as though the smog equipment has been removed, which wouldn't fly in California.
All in all it looks like a good car, and $3200 ... $2900US is a good price.

The whole 89 IROC-Z setup was swapped about 4 years ago into this base 86 V6 Camaro and it has 60 000 miles! Not much more right now the guy is saying!
The only mods if you can say that are AC delete pulley, smog delete pulley, B&M shifter and the radiator fan is always on.
The rear end is only a 2.73 POSI discs.
The Camaro doesn't have any options in it so it may be a little lighter than a tru IROC-Z.
With theses small mods and the configuation of the car, what do you think it would do in the 1/4, HP and TQ?
