Best Fuel Pump for Moderately Built 350 TPI

I need to purchase a new fuel pump but I do not know which one to purchase. I do not need anything too crazy but I do need more than the stock pump. I looked on Summit and they have Holley, Edelbrock, or BBK. The Holley is the most expensive ($159.99). and they all put out about 255 LPH. Is there an advantage from one brand to the other? Is there a better brand that I am not finding? I thought I would ask the Pro's about this one because I do not want to have to do this job twice.

Thanks!

i am also curious because i am also building a mild 350 tpi and am not sure how much fuel it needs or how many # injectors it needs.

I use a Carter fuel pump designed as an LT1 replacement. Its rated for 65 PSI and flows more than enough. I've also heard the Walbro 255 l/h is popular but it is more expensive and is more fuel than you need.

Is one really better than the other? My guess is that most of them are made in the same factory and the only difference is the label that is placed on them. I am going to run 24# Injectors, so like it was mentioned I do not need anything that flows too much. I have never heard of Walboro before? Where can they be purchased? Thanks for the help. I am still doing some research, so I will post my findings.

Okay, I purchased the 255 lph high pressure Walbro fuel pump. Is the racetronix harness worth the money? I understand that with lower voltage the pump flows proportionately less, but it should still be more than I need. I do not want to spend the $85 if I do not have to for the harness, but I also do not want to pass up an opportunity to replace the harness if needed. Rework is always more costly than doing it right the first time!

The stock pump should be good for 350 to 400 hp.

I brought the racetronix kit because I am going to be swapping out motors and possibly adding a supercharger or nitrous. Otherwise its a nice set up and works good.

Well, I went with the high flow Walbro. I was suprised because it was much cheaper than the Edelbrock, Holley, or BBK. Everything I have read talks about how good the pumps are.

Thank you for everyones help!

Fuel Pump

I think I paid $103 for the high pressure version. The normal 255 lph pump was only $93.00.

Does anyone have reccomendations for a fuel pressure regulator? I have been looking at Holley and BBK. I also noticed that most of these fuel pressure regulators just bolt on top of the stock unit to make it adjustable. Do I need to replace the diaphragm and spring as well?

Walbro 255, you can't go wrong! I've had mine for 2 years now, just make SURE to get some J30R10 fuel line to strap the pump to the rail or you'll be in the tank more than you like. J30R10 can be found online or possibly at dealerships, once again make 100% sure you do this or you'll be in the tank all the time changing the little brick, or a length of non submersible line.

Yes, but do YOU want to trust a 15 year old fuel pump? None of us do.

Thank you very much for the tips! Can you give some more details on what I need to do for the install? Would I use the J30R10 to strap the pump to the rail, or would the line jsut be used to suction fuel fromt eh bottom on the tank?

More info on this J30R10 line please. I'm getting ready to order my pump and was unaware of this particular type of line. Would it replace the hose that comes in the install kit?
Also, where did you find these pumps for $93 and $103?

You use it and 2 hose clamps to junction the fuel pump to the line, the pump itself picks up from the bottom of the tank. There's a chance your pump will come with the appropriate line, mine didn't. APEUSA.com is where i got my R10, it was like 1.50 and it got to my door in 3 days.

Just FYI....Walbro makes the pumps for Holley, and probably Edelbrock and BBK too.

Fuel Pump

I purchased the pump from JD's Performance (www.jdsperformance.com). It was around $113.00 with shipping and includes the miscellaneous needed supplies.

1991CamaroRSlow thanks for the tip on the fuel line. I never would have known to do that and I would have had to drop the tank again. If we ever meet in person I owe you a few beers because you saved me lots of work!

Kevin91Z, I wasn't saying to put a used pump in there. I meant that a stock capacity "NEW" pump would be just fine for his application.

I just ordered mine from APEUSA. After talking with them a bit I chose to go with the 190. It just made sense since I won't see anywhere near 400hp which is what they're max is. Total shipped came to just $87 for the kit.

The high pressure version is intended for forced induction cars. The standard 255 is supposed to be good for 500-600 naturally aspirated horsepower.

K , so this line needed for the tank . What is wrong with the kit , that makes you need to buy more fuel line ? Is it too short or what ?

Fuel Pump

I spoke with a technician and he told me it does not hurt to go with the high pressure version. He said that the additional fuel is pumped back into the tank. It was only $10 more, so I figured it would help in the future if I decide to do any modifications. Will a high pressure pump hurt anything?

I had heard that a 255lph was to much on a TPI car and honestly I believe it is a little large. It bumped my fuel pressure up from the stock 30/35 to 45/50 (on and off vacuum). This was fine for me since I intended to inrease the pressure in the first place but with the "high pressure" version which I'm assuming is the 60+ psi version you may run into issues with it being to much pressure for your injectors. It's true that the return style fuel system pumps the unused fuel back into the tank but those lines can only support so much before they themselves start restricting and building pressure. I bought a Mustang 255 a while back, put the length of J30R10 in finally and it's been great, I've beat that pump and beat that pump and it keeps coming back for more.

That's pretty much what they told me and what prompted me to go with the 190. I don't find swapping the fuel pump too difficult so even if I have to go in for an upgrade again it would be worth it.

Get a Walbro and be done with it.

Better and more dependable than stock.

Like was mentioned if you buy it under another brand its just marked up and repackaged.

TTA= Walbro
GTA= Walbro
Formula = Walbro

Okay, I am trying to not beat a dead horse but I am confused. Is the high pressure pump going to cause any problems if I install it?

No, the pressure is set by the regulator, not the pump. Although a bigger pump will make more noise.
