Another Cam Thread

I have an 86 Iroc-Z w/305 that’s stock, except for an Airfoil, Exhaust, and Air filters. You could say it’s a SS (Super Stock)

My question is: what should I look for in a cam? I don’t know anything about the cam style, duration, and lift. If someone could help me out with this that would be great.

Also if you have any recommendations on a cam please feel free to post your suggestions. Would an LT4 Cam work good?

Thanks

the only the problem is that an LT4 cam is a roller cam, and your motor is not. you have a flat tappet cam style.

check comp cams out for some cams.

here's a few notes.
nothing less than 112 LSA(lobe seperation angle)
intake/exhaust @ .05 lift nothing over 220/230 (and those are farely high)
if you have a stock intake no more than 218/224
the valve lift is only restricted by your springs. comp sales a hole kit that will come with every thing you will need. like cam, lifter, springs, retaners, timing chain, and push rods.
you'll also have a choice to either, keep the flat tappet cam, or change to a retro fit roller cam(which can be very expensive)

well, good luck
and feel free to ask any more questions you might have.

Yeah, the 86 TPI motors got basically the same flat tappet cam as the old LG-4 carbureted motors. Affectionately known as the "peanut cam" around these parts. You can check out the tech section for specs but if memory serves, it's 179*/194* @ .050 (that's not a misprint- it's THAT small) on a 109* LSA and lift is under .400" on both intake and exhaust. Just about any cam you would buy would be a "fire breather" compared to the stock cam.

Even the smallest cam in Comp Cams selection of Xtreme Energy cams for computer controlled EFI small blocks would be a huge compared to what you've got now. Here's the link to the cam card for it:

Camshaft Specifications

It may not look like a very large cam but consider this.... it's got 27* more intake duration @ .050 than your stock cam! That, in cam terms, is a BIG change.
