Ok fellows, I got this car running.(Been sitting for 3yrs.) I want it to run as good as it can and have been reading posts on how to do throttle body cleaning,IAC valve cleaning, etc. What I need to know is there any particular order to do these items and also how long does the engine need to run for the computer to "relearn" itself. Also while I am doing these things any recomendations or tips on tuning the car. It is in stock configuration(305 TPI,700R4) and I'm trying not to spend too much money, but will replace something if needed and worthwhile. By the way, never let a car sit up for 3 years. You will regret it! Badman

It doesnt matter what order you clean them. I would check for starters....the basic: Oil change (with oil filter) Check the air cleaners, PCV valve, Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil (maybe). Get the timing set, maybe advance it a couple degrees. And if its been sitting in 1 spot for 3 years.....your prabably going to need tires too. Radiator flush, Tranny fluid and filter change, Rear diff fluid change. (dont forget posi fluid if you have a posi!). Then see how it runs.

Actually, I have already done all that. Today I drove it around the block a few times and it runs ok but still not idleing right and sometimes the engine rpm goes up and down(surges). Tomorrow I'm going to clean the throttle body and IAC valve. Hopefully that will help. Thanks for your reply. Badman

My '85 Transam sat for 12years bud!! Just got it running a few weeks ago. I did all the fluid changes, plugs, gas filter, and so on. It runs good, but every now and then, I get a little surge as well. Nothing crazy, but just enough to let you know it's there. I think it will only go away after all of what's left of the old gas gets burnt up. I drained what I could, but there is still a few gallons of the old stuff in there. I put in some fresh Sunoco ultra to help dilute the old one, but till it all gets used up I don't expect it to run 100%. probably the same case with you.

also remember it will take close to 20 starts before the computer resets itself 100%

I've heard that before, but never had anyone confirm that. I also heard it takes about 20miles of driving for the computer to fully reset itself.

Have a new cat system and drained the fuel tank with a new pump and sending unit and filter. Guess I just need to drive it awhile till the comp. revamps itself. Thanks for the info.Badman

If you guys like seafoam, you should try a product called Startron made by Starbrite, it is available from most major marine part retailers. It was originally designed to combat the issue with ethanol blended gas and fiberglass tanks which is a nasty problem, but I have used this on many marine fuel injected and carb engines with excellent results in internal fuel system cleaning. It will actually take old gas and convert it to a burnable state so tank draining is not neccessary. Have also been using this in my cars with the same great results.

Hey all...Have an 85 Iroc 305 TPI that sat for "YEARS" as well. Noticed it had a surging problem as well. It would only do this when the car was warmed up and shut off then restarted. I did the usual... oil change, coolant flush and refilled, new fuel filter, seafoam, new cap and rotors and pugs and wires.... to no avail....even had the IAC cleaned and replaced. Then I decided to change the MAF, and it surged "ever so slightly" after the installlation for about a month... (not like it was) and EVENTUALLY...the thing eventually quit surging as I drove her. (note it only surged after the car was warmed up then shut off, sitting a few moments, and restarted) I am guessing my driving the thing and putting long miles on it (not those short trips...just driving it an hour or more before I would shut it off) helped the surge go away. I have only 30,000 "ORIGINAL" miles on this car now. (When I bought it, she had 24,502 miles on her ORIGINAL). Just noticed every once in a while the check engine light has been lighting up and throwing a code 32 I believe, changed the EGR selonoid, but the check engine light thing still is coming up on that code every so often. I am storing this car for the winter here, disconnecting the battery, and HOPING that this spring, the light issue on that code will be resolved! I am just vowing "NEVER" to buy a car from someone when it has been sitting for "YEARS", no matter how excellent the body is! Lesson learned! I just think I did resolve that surging problem by changing the MAF. Good Luck!

30000 original miles on her huh? Mine has 33000 original miles (53000 Kilometers here in canada). My surging problem has gotten much better as I've been driving it here and there. Only did it once today just before the electric fan came on, so I guess that's a definate improvement. Put some more fresh Sunoco in it again today, and hopefully it'll go away by the time I have to get some more gas.
