Can I Remove the Activated Charcoal Filter?

Is it possible to remove the activated charcoal filter from our cars? Is this possible? Advisable? I'm doing an engine swap at the moment and am looking to clean up the engine bay a little.

The car in question is a 1989 350ci TPI?

Depends on where you live. Emission laws ect. Mine went in the trash when I installed my SLP intake. I cut the wires short, and taped them up. Plugged the lines. Ive had no problems.

Do you drive a lot? Supposedly the evap system can prevent fuel evaporation, just something to keep in mind. With gas being well over $2/gallon it may not be worth it to you.

If you do a search, there is a lot of threads on this. I remember reading the factory put the can there for a reason. Your gas tank needs to be able to vent gas fumes. If you take it out, you should really get a vented gas cap.(the stock one is not vented, because we have the evap box).

Draconic, I wish gas was $2 per gallon over here! I live in the UK and a US Gallon of fuel costs about $7 or $8 here. 85% of that price goes directly to the Government in tax.

I'm not worried about emissions or anything, regarding the canister removal.

Would I have to vent the gas tank in another way if I removed it?

The basic function of the EVAP canister is to collect fumes from the tank and purge them into the throttle body at given times. The fuel tank has its own vent just in front of the tank. Just that I have never understood why it still hisses when opening the cap. If you still want all that you can get for your fuel economy, I would keep it in place. I have heard of them being relocated for the cleaned up look and the fuel economy. Just where would you put them?
