OTC 2000 scanner

I'm trying to use my OTC 2000 scanner on my 87TPI350 GTA ,,,,but when i hook it up the idle goes to 1000 and stays there and the engine pings if i try to drive it...as soon as i disconnect the scanner everything goes back to normal ...but i can't get the readings and check the Iac counts.I think its going into some kind of diagnostic mode...anyone have any idea's on why this is happening ...i've used this scanner on other cars ...it worked fine

Hey I've got one of those scanners too, borrowed from a freind. The only thing it didn't help me on was setting timing, can you do it by the OTC or not? Mine read 23degrees what is that, total timing or base or what? How do you figure the timing advance from that reading?
Thanx in advance.

I don't think you can set the timing by the OTC. I've always done it with a timing light. Either way, if you don't disconnect the brown wire on the firewall anything you do won't matter anyway.
