406 vs 383 dollar per dollar
hi guys just have a few questions for anyone with a 406 tpi setup, i talked to my engine shop today and they told me they could build a 406 cheeper then a 383 minus the heads, so thats a no brainer , the guy said that my 700r4 should bolt right up to the 406 ? anyone got comments about that one,i know that the 350 in my car now is a chevy motor but still dont know if there is anything diffrent becuase its a pontiac (89 formula 350) allso, if i go with the 406 and keep the tpi setup, or actually im going with a miniram setup, keeping fuel injected, how hard would it be to find headers for a 406 in a fbody, allso was just wondering if anyone has a 406 mini ram setup, and what you think about the pro and cons of it , vs the 383 , keep in mind that later down the road i want a supercharger added, so is there kits out there built for a 406 or would it not be much diffrent from the 350, any comments or answers please tell, thanks

1)Your tranny should bolt up
2)You will use the same headers as what youll use on a 350
3)pros-
bigger displacement (more power to start with)
cons -
heads gotta be drilled for steam holes(small con)
its not a 350 block(forget this if you dont have visual inspection for emmisions, inspection stations wouldnt care to find out anyway)

This may be adumb question, i dont know beccause im not in a emissions area, but do the test go according to year of car or year of engine?
Are you planning on a chevy or pontiac block for the 406, the chevy will bolt up, i'm not sure about he pontiac. In the future i plan on building a pontiac FI 406 to go into my pontiac car.
I'm not sure about the headers, yo may have to go with stock manifolds. I know Guido is buliding a 406 right now with some big plans.

FYI, there are NO Pontiac blocks in a 3rd Gen. The only NON-Chevy motor that ever came in a 3rd Gen is the Turbo 3.8 V6 Buick in the Turbo TA.
A 406 SBC V8 is an SBC V8. They are all interchangeable, though you may have to change the flexplate and make accomodations for the sensors. If you plan to run TPI, you'll need heads designed for the TPI.
The oil dipstick will now be on the driver's side too, which is always a clue that the person swapped out his 305/350 SBC for a 406.
