Damper and Timing Question

Hey guys, I have a little bit of a dilemma here. I just bought a new distributor; when I rotate the engine and put #1 piston on TDC, the mark (groove) on the damper is almost halfway around instead of lining up with the #0 on the timing tab. Dampers only go in one possible way; what gives?
Also, the engine is running rough, especially if I put the trans in first and drive at about 3000 RPMs, it misses a lot.
Thanks for any help you can provide
Rick

Was the timing mark right before you changed the distributor? Balancers that have alot of use some times have the outer ring slip also. Or it could always be that 305 balancer on a 350?

Oh and true tdc is found by making the piston hit the stop going clockwise, and then turning ccw and tdc is between the two. If you knew this already than ignore me.
