Speed density open element on a MAF car

could you just cut off the hose that goes from the MAF sensor to the Throttle Body and and connect the MAF sensor directly to the open element. This seems like it would be a good gain becuase you would still be getting the cold air from the outside, but you would also have a supply of air coming through the sides of the open element. Also, The MAF would still be in tact.
I was just thinking about this the other day and wondered if it would work.
thanks

If you remove the rubber piece that goes from the MAF to the throttle body, how are you gonna connect the round MAF to the oval throttle body? Your best bet is to make your own cold air setup, keeping the MAF in place. Even those of us with speed density think sticking the air filter directly on the throttle body is a bad idea.

Best thing to do is convert over to the MAP system. The price of one bad MAF pays for it. Granted is work.

Great idea. I paid 89 bucks for the MAF that is in another car, because it was missing. Its been in there 6 years now and hasnt failed. I'd like to see you find a wiring harness, ECM, and figure in the time to change it over for less than that.

My point? Stop giving out bad advice about swapping from MAF to MAP because you like it and insist its better.

I was thinking that if I left the MAF in place then it would fit snug against the filter. Feeding it plenty of cool air. Isnt the front of the filter open also. I was just thinking of the idea and thought it might be beneficial. thanks for the replies.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying... In order for the MAF to work properly, it needs to be between the air filter and the throttle body. It sounds like you're asking if you can put the MAF sensor on the front of the air filter? No that wont work.
