TPI Acceleration problem....please help

Hey guys. Heres the problem. My 1987 TA GTA, had a MAF crap out last summer. It was original. I changed it with the wells model which im sure most of you are familiar with. Anyway since the swap, my car has developed some sort of hic-up. I can't get the engine above 4000RPM when it's cold. (I mean engine cold not outside air temp). This happens in any gear and in Park or Neutral. It will not rev over 4000. If you put your foot to the floor it starts bacfireing and farting and popping, the car starts surging like someone driving a standard bad. Sometimes I can Smell raw fuel and see brown smoke billowing out the **** end. But....When the engine comes up to normal operating temp, the problem seems to go away. Please...someone have an answer for this problem. Thanx.

1987 T/A GTA 5.7L JET Stage 2 chip, comp cam, Eddelbrock headers, flowmaster exhaust,Adjustable Fuei pressure regulator, bored and ported. Home depot ram air (Hey it looks nice)

Your definately running rich. It seems to go away somewhat when your engine heats up is probably because thats when your oxygen sensor becomes active. Sounds like your new MAF is junk. Usually your "service engine" light will be on for a bad MAF(flash the code if got the light). Try tapping on the MAF while its running, if idle jumps thats your problem. But even if idle stays steady that doesn't mean its good. If the MAF is under warranty get another(car quest auto parts has a lifetime warranty on your MAF). You may also want to check: fuel press, TPS adjustment, and if your cold start valve is sticking open.

Don't forget to check the obvious, like that you remembered to plug the electrical connection into the MAF when you installed it. (Happened to me) That would definately throw a code, but then again maybe you're not seeing a code because your SES light is burnt out or missing. (Happened to me too) Make sure it comes on momentarily when you start the car to ensure it's there and working properly. I would imagine with the symptoms you described you'd almost have to be throwing a code.

Try disconnecting the MAF, and see if the problem goes away. If so, well, time for a new MAF. I have not had much success with aftermarket FI parts........

I'm thinking that tapping a Wells MAF will do no good. It uses a circuit board instead of a thin wire like the original did. The "tap" test was for the wire model.

Fellow third genner "Vader" has about the most experience with the Wells MAF.

You might consider checking your fuel injectors, sounds like they might be leaking down after you shut off the car, when you restart you are burning off excess fuel. Smoke, choke, fart, spit, until it clears up excess fuel..........just a thought.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
