400 ci and still pass the sniffer??
I'm looking at going with a 400 from my local builder for my 91. Its still pretty much all stock. For the same price he said he would build me a 400 (406)
Do you guys think its still possible to pass emmissions with a somewhat tame 400? or can i go with more cam and just get a chip burnt? I would love to go more cam but worried about passing emmissions. Also, it was a 305 car....how do they do the emmissions on a car that was a 305 that is now a 350 or more????

I beat CA emmisions back in 93 with a 90 firebird, originally 305 TBI. We used a 400 from a 76 Caprice and a 454 TBI. We passed easy.
CA emissions requires a visual inspect and a sniffer. We passed both easy because the guy who inspected didn't realize that the dipstick was on the wrong side!

Re: 400 ci and still pass the sniffer??
Other than the dipstick being on the wrong side, and the block having a two-piece rear main seal instead of one-piece (uses a different flywheel/flexplate), there really isnt a difference. If you have a competent computer tuner (which you should anyway if you're building a non-stock engine) you should have no trouble passing smog with a 400. Just do not tell the smog tech you changed engines, because legally you're not allowed to put an older engine or block into a newer car.
