I want to know how much hp can give me a stage 2 chip. I want to install headers and 170 thermostat with it.

Stage 2 chip... well since there really is no definition I'll make my own:

Stage 2 is a marketing term used by (Insert manufacturer name here) to charge you twice as much money for a polished pile of feces.

Most chips (read ff the shelf) modify the timing table only. Very few (read:Stage 2 or favorite marketing term here) modify the fan temp setting and torque converter lockup. Even fewer, the 'real' custom chips, modify the fuel settings as well, and maybe but not usually a few other things.

Honestly, I'd stick with a stock chip and bump the timing up a few degrees. Same result. Eventually you may want to do some more radical mods and burn your own, in which case you can check out the PROM article and the PROM board. If you can pick up a chip fairly cheap (read:almost free) then it couldnt hurt. I think the best in the last test I read gained .2 in the 1/4. I have heard of people picking that much with bumping the timing up, which is basically all the chip does anyway.

Many people here don't like brand name chips. Their arguments have their points.
I can only speak from experience. I got a Hypertech Thermomaster(stage 2)before I stumbled o this website. I'll tell you this much, I got at least 20hp from the darn thing. I mean the difference was incredible. The most apperant change was before the chip the car would not make power beyond 4500rpm.The stock programming has an rpm limiter. With the chip I can stay in gear longer. I can now shift at 5200-5500rpm.That alone is worth it.Stepping up your timing is not gonna get rid of that factory rpm limiter(on stick cars). I have nothing but good thins to say about my Hypertech chip. Of course like they say, results wary from car to car.

Check out this site.... http://www.fastchip.com
Ed Wright is good! There are some "pre-burned" chips that he has for most application thirgens and then he custom burns chips to your exact mods!! $350 for the custom chip! Sounds like a lot huh?? How 'bout this....he says if the chip won't work, he'll tinker with it a little until he get's it right! But he's been doing this for YEARS and can "usually" get it right the first time!!

Soon to upgrade to a 383 stroker w/TPI, Hedman Shorty Headers, 64cc Pocket Ported Worlds Product Sportsman-II heads, ported intake, comp cam, TPIS air foil, Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator, and 24 lb/hr SVO injectors!
Current project: Keeping my car running until I get the money for the above mentioned project! :-)

Not a flame, but I have never seen the rpm limiter set at 4500 or even close. Sounds to me like something is amiss.

If you say you got 20hp from a hypertech chip then you are smoking crack. The 'RPM limiter' as you call it is more evidence of that.

I have access to many PROM images (including a HyperJunk Thermomaster and a '90 305 TPI) and I can tell you exactly what HyperJunk changes. Trust me - bumping your base timing and adjusting your FP via an AFPR would do about the same exact thing. If you want real tuning then learn how to burn your own PROMs. Check my sig.

  • Program your own PROMs!. Read my article to get started!
  • Research and Experiment before asking questions.
  • This is not a chip store. Go to the classifieds if you want someone to sell you a chip or give you a BIN.

What dyno or what were the time differences?.
Or is a Buttometer test?.
I kinda doubt the testing here.

Let me add my voice to the chorus and say:

1) these "off-the-shelf" chips do very little other than play with the spark advance and generally, only in the mid-range area, and

2) Burning your own eprom is the BEST way to go. It takes a little time and a little money to get started. But if you are patient and persist at it, you will get results that NO custom prom writer can match.

Also, as you play with more and more, the changes become easier to do and you do get much quicker at it.
