Who sells the best maf for the money?

Whats up?
I've recently figured out one of my major tpi issues! My car had some really bad idle problems. In neutral, I would rev the engine to 3000rpms! The computer would cut gas' the revs would fall to1100 rpms & then shoot back up to about 2500rpms drop to 500 & die!
My problem is the maf!!!! Today i had the car idling, & then it started to run really rough. So I tapped the maf sensor with my screwdriver , The idle smooth it self out completely!! When I tapped the maf a few more times the idle became really rough & the car died! My question is, can someone tell me the best place & price for a maf? In the near future I'm planning on switching the 305 for a 383-400ci motor, so the maf I purchase must be compatiable with the 305 motor that is currently in the car for now & also not so small where as it wont choke the new motor!!!!
thanx in advance

86,

I've had very good impressions of the Wells SU-145 MAF. It uses the same technology as the newer LT1/LS1 style sensors, with a thick film sensor instead of the hot wire, a flat metal honeycomb matrix in place of the round wire screens in the orignial (and aftermarket clone) units, and has no large internal heat sinks to impede air flow. It also has a larger inside diameter than the OEM sensor housings.

You can see some of the differences here:

I am also looking into a new MAF, I have a 34 diagnostic code. Is the Wells SU-145 a direct bolt in (wire in) in place of the Bosch? So far I cannot find a local store that carries it. I have found a reman. by Cardone. Where would I find the MAF relay in the 1989 GTA 5.7? NAPA sells the relay for $12. Thought I would change both to cover all bases. Thanks for any info...

The MAF relay is on the driver's side firewall. There is a group of relays there. The others are for your fans. There is a pic around here that labels the relays but I couldnt find it while looking just now...

Thanks for the info on the MAF relay, I will look for the labled picture. Please post if you happen across it as this site is quite large. Also, did the GTA come with a factory alarm system. I have a disconnected horn (siren) and motion detectors on driver side firewall. Thanks for the info...

I got just a stock replacement MAF from a local AC/Delco distributor for $330. TPIS has MAFs in there 2000 catalog that sell for $260 as a stock replacement, or as $300 modified.

Ouch, $300 for a tube of air sounds steep to me.It doesn't even have a printed circuit board like the overpriced electronic controls I install. I did find a picture of the firewall relays. The Wells unit at $166 is sounding better all the time.

How much better does the Wells flow compared to the stock type?

If it flows better, seems like a good buy just for the improved airflow.

The only thing I don't like about the Wells MAF is that unlike the Bosch MAF, it doesn't have the threaded inserts in the mounting points.
At least with my old Bosch, I could bolt it in to the hanger. Every time I mess with the Wells, it pops out of the rubber mount...

Brian Garrow at Wells Manufacturing doesn't quote flow numbers, but the Bosch unit is 70mm I.D. at the largest point, has two round wire screens, a large set of heat sink fins, and a sampling tube that hangs on a pair of mounting arms - all in the air stream. The Wells unit has a better flowing single flat metal matrix instead of the wire screens, a single circuit card 0.045" thick, and a tube I.D. that is 73mm at its smallest point, up to 78mm at the largest. What do you think would flow better. I know the Wells unit will do at least 690 SCFM, but that's as high as the Robertshaw flow tester would go reliably when I tested the two units.

Simply put, if a "gutted" Bosch MAF is suposed to flow 700SCFM, a larger Wells tube with less crap hanging in the air stream should flow better (and does - even with the metal matrix "screen" in the front opening).

Granatelli Engineering is working on one for TPI cars now, and should have it out in the not-too-distant future.

Not sure if they're looking at Vette only or both Thirdgen and Vette.

In any case, could be a real plus for anyone with MAF.
