REGULATOR

Im confused,I HAVE A 1988 GTA 5.7 and in a pontiac performance magazine it read that only the plenum needs to be removed to replace the fuel pressure regulator, but in my haynes repair manual it states that you have to remove the whole fuel rail. The reason im asking is becuase I would like to put an adjustable regulator in. Also in this tech article in the magazine it mentioned bumping the timing from the stock 6 degreee to 13 degree, has anybody done this? One last thing and I know this has been covered before, but what is the best way to remove the two screens on the maf sensor.

thanks

1) You just need to remove the plenum.

2) I'd start with only going to 8º

3) Don't remove the screens.

For #3, search the tech board for the reasons why.

As far as the screens go i used a hack saw. If you are careful you will not have any problems. I can see where if you were to shove a screwdriver through the maf wire it might not work but that is where being careful comes in. I did mine and have never had any problems.

dont remove the screens, it wont create any hp increase unless your engine is making 400hp ,,and it may cause your car to throw a code,, so leave it be..

Hey now... let's be nice, it's the man's opinion. I removed my MAF screens two years ago and did not have any problems because of it, but others have. It's a roll of the dice.

If you are just replacing the internals of the regulator then no, you don't have to remove the rail, but if you are replacing the whole assembly, then I don't see any way you can get it out without removing the fuel rail.

Timing, I would advance it until it starts to knock and then back off about 2 degrees. I have mine set at 10*
