tpi in pontiac trans am `89

Hi my friend have a trans am `89 with the `90 engine. 89 models are equipped wiht maf and 90 with map, am I correct?

I dont know if he has computer from 89 or 90 model. Tha car was dong good for 3 months now he has 33 36 codes for maf sensor. the rpm are jumping from 300 to 2000, there is no black smoke with came out of my camaro when I had a bad maf so he needs hel. I havent seen the car with my own eyes.

Does trans am tpi has maf, map or what ever?
in this black plastic box ?

could it be the iaac valve?...

Ummm. Well, all TPI until '89 had MAF. 90-92 had Speed Density (MAP). If the car runs at all, it has to have a computer set up for speed density. The MAF computers dont have the charts and tables that MAP computers use to meter fuel. Hope this helps somewhat, but sorry, I cant really understand your last two questions.

easiest way to tell if you see a round black sensor between the air box and the throttle body you have maf if it just has the elbow off the tb and it goes into the box without any sensors or electric wiring you have speed density.the other way is look under the hood next to the master cylinder(brake booster)how many relays do you have you should have none for SD 2 for maf.if you have maf check those relays first it's a good place to start
