Easiest way to pass inspection in NJ?
Well I got the stock exhaust off the bird and realized the previous owner uh hum unclogged the cats as it were
and so the way it stands it probably wont pass the sniffer in Jersey which has the dyno. What is the best way to at least try and pass it without cats? I would assume 87 octane gas possibly a little less fuel pressure as well as taking out timing. If theres anything else please let me know. I dont mine replacing the cats to be "tree hugger friendly" but just right now I'd rather hold that money considering. Anywayz thanks

im in ny so test is the same, you need a clean functioning egr soleniod and valve, feul evaporative canister/soleniod should be working properly. it will pass with no cats, as long as you have a smog pump and the air injection tubes in the stock manifolds, and the egr. these pump cold air into the exhaust(o2) to feed the flames and burn up unburned hydrocarbons. the egr cuts out the noX gasses by recycling some exhaust into the intake, this works to reduce cylinder tempuratures, and thus no more oxides of nitrogen. if this stuff is funtional then you should have no problems. retarding the timing a bit may help to burn up more gasses too but i dont know.
A guy I work with has a 88 Firbird 305TBI with no cat. He took it to a gas station to have it checked, not the state facilities, the car is in perfect condition except for the cats. You can also try pulling you air filters right before you get to the inspection place and dump some stuff you can buy at Wal-Mart that claims a reduction in emmisssion, it might help, it might not, give it a shot, and make sure the car has a fresh tune-up. You want it to burn as much of the fuel in the cyliders as possable.

Alcolhol in the gas. Not good for the o rings in the system though. Let the gas go towards "E" then put a bunch of drygas in then after the test fill it with fuel so you dont screw up the o rings. Thats what I am going to do if I dont pass next time with my miniram.

I work for the NJ Inspection Program. I have been trying to pass my IROC (high NOX) for 2 weeks now. It has passed 5 years straight, now I am adding more mods, it is throwing everything off. I used to inspect the cars, now I repair and maintain all the lane equipment. Take it from me, it is immpossible to get by the emissions in a state facility. If you fail, you just need to go home and fix it. You can try a local garage, but as far as I know, they can't "JUST" pass your emissions either. Plus it may cost you upwards of $70. You should not have any problems with no cat and the stage that you are at now.
If and when you go for inspection, tell the first technician that you see that you want a "Low Mileage Exemption." This test only checks for CO and HC, no NOX. You will not be required to go on the Dyno. With this exemption, you are only allowed 10,000 miles driven within 2 years. They will ask you how many miles you drive within this time period, tell them around 6000 or 7000 miles. If you drive over this amount within 2 years, you WILL be required to take the Dyno test next time around. GOOD LUCK!!!!
E-mail -irocrob@webtv.net for any questions or assistance.
