How to get 250 to 275 hp out of a 305tpi?

The car is a 85 Trans am. Right now the car is way down on power. I have bad valve seals and the car smokes all the time. I think I have a bad compression which is why it might be down on power. anyway, I want to get 250 or more rear wheel HP. If I just add headers and port the stock heads can I achieve this? I want the car to run mid 14's or less. Or should I just buy new heads for the 305? If so what kind?

here's what I'd do.
1)spray the motor and see how long it takes till it gives
2) scrap the 305 and build a 350
3) refer to #'s 1 and 2

seriously, find a 350 ( for about $105 around here) and build that, in the long run you'll like that way more than the 305, and besides it cost the same to build!

Mid 14's? You are not asking for much. My 305 does that, and I didn't have to do that much. I did convert my LG4 to tuned port, but you really can't consider that, because it brings me up the the LB9 playing field, which you may already have. Granted, it made a HUGE difference, but if you already have the LB9, then you were one step aheah, and you might even have a bigger camshaft.

Headers is what put me from a 15.0 to a 14.5. It make a HUGE SOTP difference. I reccomend them to anybody. I also put 3.73 gears in and that helped to. check out the sig.

The worse thing you can do is follow the herd. How many guys are out there who take a motor that's on the ragged edge from normal high mileage and throw go faster parts at it? That's a really good way to find the weakest link. Start from the bottom up, literally. If your motor passes a compression check, move to the next component. Cam and heads (which should always be changed in a matched set.) For a 305, which is what I am working on now, I am going with the World Products Torquer 305. It has 58cc combustion chambers and larger valves than stock. It alone is good for an average of +45~+50 hp (latest Camaro Perfomers from Super Chevy.) I haven't decided on a cam yet that should work really well with the Torquer 305. Once the inside of the motor is breathing, go for the headers and siamesed runners. Another problem with bolt ons, is they usually add horsepower by sacrificing torque. But again, first start at the basics and build up. It's more expensive, it takes longer, but it will result in a motor that won't brake on you when you need it most.
