what would cause this

Ok. When I start the car cold and drive it around it runs great. Volts are at about 14.5.

After 15minutes of driving, the volts drop to 13.5 and the car surges. Soon after, it dies. It does this over and over and over again. I'm getting COde 42. Electronic Spark Timing monitor error.

The alternator is new, the battery is new, the spark plugs are new, the wires are new, the cap and rotor are new. Could it be the Electronic Control Module?

change the ignition module in the distributor. if that doesnt fix it then you have a bad computer. yours sounds like the ignition module is quitting once it heats up though. they are like 30 bucks at autozone.

If you have a pre-90 TPI car (BTW, it always helps to state the year, induction, etc...) you'll have a external EST box, located on the driverside firewall (is on my '89 IROC) which could be at fault.

I hear the SD TPI's have them either piggybacked onto the EPROM, or incorporated into the ECM, not sure either way.

I'd also check the EST bypass connector, make sure there's no corrosion and make sure it's plugged in well and also trace the wiing back to the distribuor to make sure all is good and intact.

his car is stalling. the only thing causing this would be a ignition module or ecm. if the est box was bad or the wire was disconnected it would run in limp home spark mode. you can pretty much tell from his description that his ignition module is breaking down when it gets hot.

Good advice. Be sure and use plenty of dielectric grease on the underside of the module - when I did my TPI swap, it started like crap. Swapped from the iroc distributor to my stock one and it was fine. Someone left only a tiny bit of grease on there, plus the Iroc distributor had a heat shield over the module. Needless to say, the module was junk.
