Removing the GTA air filter canister 'Rain Guard' - Safe or Worth it?

I've cut out large squares out of my 1988 GTA's air filter canister and put on a K&N air filter and I've noticed an slight improvement and I'm wondering if it is safe or benefitable to remove the black molded plastic 'rain gaurd' to the left of the air filter canister? Is it worth the trouble or will the motor just inhale hotter air and actually hurt performance?

I AM NOT SURE WHAT YOUR AIR INTAKE IS LIKE, but on my 86, it had a steel canister with a square plasitc lid, ON MY setup, your not supposed to cut holes in the canister because the filter filters air from the inside out. ON MY set up the only thing you should cut is the lid, and even then there is barely enough room to make a difference. I got rid of the whole system and made one from 3" pvc and a clamp on k&n. The mass-airflow sensor is rounted in there also.

this may not be wut u are talking about, but on my GTA, i have a open K&N filter attached the the black intake hose with basicaly nothing surrounding it, its open on all sides, and i have driven through some tuff rain with no problem. But then again they may not be wut your talking about.

take it off if you want,, i dont see how that prevents rain from going anywhere, the hood does that

the piece he is talking bout looks like a bell on the canister all it does is streamline the air coming from behind the passenger headlight you most likly wont see anything from it i would reccomen going to home depot getting a 28in. peice of 3in. pvc pipe(paint it to your liking and attach a k&n directly to the end of the pvc with the k&n filter sticking through the pass. fender slightly.
