LT1 intake on L98, need cam advice

Since the Alternative Port Intake guys didn't want to offer any advice, I'll try here.

I'm swapping to an LT1 Intake and need some advice on the cam.

Vehicle specs:
89 Formula
TCI 10" 3,000 stall converter
3.27 gears
Stock iron heads
Shorty headers w/ ORY and Magnaflow bullet muffler
CAI
52mm TB
MSD 6A/MSD coil
UD Pullies
1.6 RR

Will also have custom chip burned as well. What cam would work well with this set up? Thanks in advance, Chris.

I went with the comp cam xfi 280 cam, but I got a 383 and better heads.

Go with 2 steps down, 268 or smaller yet.

What are your goals? Roller block?

Your stock L98 iron heads are going to limit what cam you can use. Specifically the lift. It will be interesting to see how well the LT1 intake works with the stock L98 heads. Does not the LT1 intake have taller ports than the ports on the L98 heads? If so that could be a problem.

Re: LT1 intake on L98, need cam advice

the ports line up ok with L98 heads, but it aint perfect and could benefit from a little port matching if your looking for good power numbers...but thats limited since the L98 heads will crap out the numbers anyway.

The best cams for LT1 motors are custom grinds from Advanced induction and Bret Bauer/Lloyd Elliot. Those cams work well with the short runners. They like alittle overlap, especially the high revving combinations.

with stock L98 heads tho, i wouldnt go too big with the cam or too much overlap. XFI 218/224 is a great little cam but its very aggressive profiles and high lift will require alot of work to the Iron heads to work. you'll need screw in studs, great valve springs and good lifters/pushrods/guideplates and non self aligning rockers generally but you may beable to use self align style with out guideplates.

Another good off the shelf grind is the cc503...very popular LT1 grind, it works well with the LT1 intake. Same with the LT4 hotcam...both will deliver similar power, yet the hotcam can be found for CHEAP

All depends on your goals tho, but the hotcam and 503 grinds will be about the max i'd run on a stock L98 headed setup. They will peak at 5500-5700 rpms
