Pollution junk

I have my engine tore down to the heads and block and am changing cam. I was wondering if there would be any problems if I leave the pollution pump off and take the rest of the pollution junk off? Im not worried about emmisons I just want to get rid of some of the extra sh*# under the hood!
Thanks

I'll second that, there's NUMEROUS posts on the topic here, TBI, and the General Board. Do a search for "AIR pump, smog pump, etc.."

The only con besides failing a VISUAL underhood inspection I could come up with is there's a POSSIBILITY of a clogged converter IF it's still stock. Mine hasn't gone in 2 months so far.

That's a very short, nutshell answer. for more details try a search first, and if you're still having questions keep this post goin'

Tite86,

Welcome Aboard!

You can safely eliminate the A.I.R. pump, diverter valve, and plumbing if you want, but I would suggest you keep the EGR system. GM Tech has a nice article on his site addressing the power loss from removing the EGR.

Eliminating some of the "pollution junk" may set trouble codes and light your MIL lamp constantly, like so many Dodge Caravans you see limping around...

Also, what year 350 did you swap into your '86? Just curious.

hey vader.
just a quick question, does it cause problems removing the diverter valve in colder climates?

Slayer,

Not sure. I still have all my A.I.R. system in place since it doesn't cost any power and I didn't need room for a blower. Besides, I park it in cold weather. However, if I understand you idea, I don't think the enrichment problem would be too much worse in colder weather - it would just take longer to clear it out, and make take forever to heat up the cat converter and O2 sensor. On short trips you might never heat the cat and could eventually clog it with carbon. Adding the extra air to the exhausts in front of the cat eliminates (or at least reduces) that potential.
