No MAF on car...still runs great?
Not my car...it is speed density. But my brother has a 89 305 tpi 5 spd and when he tries to hook up a MAF it runs like crap. It will ususally go dead when you come to a stop. We were thinking it was in the wiring system, since it has a bunch of electrical tape around it. But we opened up the tape and found nothing wrong with it. His check engine light stays on all the time of course(he has a plastic cup with tape around it in place of the MAF and the harness is sitting to the side...gee I wonder why the SES light is on). But other than that the car runs great. He runs low fifteens which at the track we go to is really good. He gets better gas mileage than I do.
Any ideas on what is going on?

your MAF is most likely bad, when its connected the computer tries to use the improper info the MAFis sending it and runs like a turd. but when you disconnect it the ecm goes into a defualt a uses the TPS primarily tomake timing and fuel adjustments. its happened to me before... get a MAF for it.

yep it sounds like the mass air flow is bad. what code does it have? Like stated a bove try the relay first but, I went through 2 napa mass airflows and my freind used one as well they never did work. we both ended up getting new ones from the dealer and that was all it took don't ask why but, some after market brands just won't work I have heard good about the auto zone ones though too. I guess they are cheeper and flow more. may be I just saw 3 of the only napa ones that did not work but, I doubt it.
