I am pulling a 5.7l TPI engine out of a 1987 IROC, any tips?

Hi guys,

I am going to be pulling a 5.7l TPI out of an 1987 IROC to put inot my 1972 Blazer 4x4. I was just wondering if you could give me some info, suggestions, tips as to how I should go about this. The car is about 800 miles from my place so it is quite a road trip and I don't want to forget anything that I will really need. So for example, where is the VSS unit located on a 1987? Where is the MAF unit? What does the MAF look like? How much would a MAF for an '87 cost? Are there any sensors that are in hard to reach areas that I might miss? Where inside is the computer located?, etc., etc, ....

Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Thanks,

Rod

ill try and help ya out a bit but im not 100% sure of everything ya need to take. heres a pic to start with.....

ok thats where the MAF and the MAF relays are located. So know ya know what they look like and where they go. You will need the harnesses for both the relays and MAF itself so dont forget them. Most of the other sensors are on the engine already. Your gona need a O2 sensor for the exhaust if you dont take the one on the car. a new maf can run up to and over $400 so take the one in the car if it works. The ECM is located inside the vehicle under the dash on the passenger side i think. I have never touched mine so im not 100% sure on the location. There are also a few other relays on the firewall you will need to take out too. Just pretty much grab everything you can out of the engine bay. anything you dont need later you can just toss or sell. good luck man, hope this helps a bit.

I replaced the 5.7l engine in my '87 iroc last summer. You'll need to take the fuel rails off of the tpi and everything above them to get the engine safely chained to a hoist, that means you'll need an extensive torx set. The sensors and relays are pretty easy to figure out once you dig in, it would be pretty hard to neglect one. Other tuffies: Exhaust manifold collector bolts, use wd-40 and a blow torch(not at the same time of course); bellhousing bolts, box end wrenches work great here(I think we only got two from above, the rest from below); and watch out for the multiple ground leads on the rear of the cylinder heads, these are easy to miss. If you need any more specifics, email me, I have digi pics of the whole process and I remember it like it was yesterday. Good Luck

Or instead of disassembling the engine in the car, buy or rent a 4-way leveler; you don't have to take the TPI off if you do it that way.

You'll want the underhood harness (everything going to the motor, and the relays), the fans and associated wiring/relays if you're going to keep electric fans, the ESC module that's on the firewall next to the wiper motor, the under-dash harness that goes to the ECM, the ALDL connector harness extension, etc...

I'd take as much of the wiring as possible if I were you.

When you start pulling things, follow all of the wires, when it hooks up to seomthing pull everything associated with it.

If you could buy the whole car that would make your life lots easier.

Check the VIN, make sure its a 350, 8th didget for 350 is "8" 305 is "F"
