TPI to carb
TPI to carb
OK, my last question went ignored....let me clarify it.
Due to a trashed wiring harness, blown computer, and my ignorance. I am considering going to a non computer controlled old school carb since I have some experience with them.
I have the DDM engine code suffix indicating it's a 305 from and 83 firebird, placed in an 85 IROC with TPI. I am told it has a cam, heads and exhaust, and only 5000 miles on it. I dont know if that is true because I have not had the thing running or had the engine out.
Questions:
What carb/manifold combo can I use to keep it calif. smog legal I am assuming any current mods couldnt be too drastic and still use the TPI (but what do I know)
is there an easy way to indentify the heads with all the garbage still bolted on?
Would I be better off getting engine compartment and interior wiring harnesses and trying to make the thing run with TPI?
What is the approximate value of a TPI unit, and manifold and all the garb minus the computer?
Im going for the cheapest route to make it a daily driver for now. Car was free, life is good to me like that.

the only emissions legal intake that i am aware of which has EGR is the edelbrock performer. they make these for the old style and newer bolt pattern heads. i do not know what carb setup you can use, it would have to be something offered on the camaro in that year to be "legal." you should easily be able to pick up an 86 wiring harness and computer and stuff. i believe that this should work with your TPI hardware since both had cold start injector systems and the 86 is supposed to be a better ECM.
TPI is worth 400.00 or so without harness which i would not recommend using the harness in any other car other than its original intention.
i finally gave up after several hours of sorting through wire to splice the TPI harness into my 84 monte SS. bought an aftermarket harness and installed it completely in an afternoon.

Hey man. I currently have an 81 Z & an '87 Iroc. In my 81 Z, there is currently my carbed 383. I am switching over to TPI because of it's reliability, great throttle response and because i am fed up with carbs!
Trust me, you will at least learn something new doing a TPI setup. It kinda interests me!
BTW, This is my baby.....

Gruvin84SS......
You say you found a nice after market harness? Where?
As for the 86 wiring harness you mentioned, I hear the 85 setup was proprietary for that year, sure an 86 would work with it?
To back up your ECM I have heard the 85 was sort of the beta test year, and the newer ones are considerably better, just not sure if it works with the hardware in the car. Thanx, Think I am going to ride it out with the TPI and make it work.

with your stuff, i would recommend using an 86 factory harness since it is designed for your car. my aftermarket is designed to run only TPI stuff. the 85 ECM is complete crap. get wire harness and ECM from 86. make sure that you get the burn off setup from 86, different from 85.
Cool thanx, Im off hunting for all that now......Should be a real treat. So considering this engine may have a cam and heads in it, but it's unknown what specs they are. Any suggestions for the prom ?
