Has anyone changed theirs for a aftermarket one? I'm just wondering what benefits I might see.

Ask the manufacturers. Im sure they will claim that your engine runs smoother and will last longer. Not much else it could do except look pretty.

I've read all the claims, but I'm looking for real world prrof here. These things are not cheap, so I don't want to spend the money only to find out it made no difference.

Nobody eh?

I installed a TD Performance balancer on my 355 since it has the SFI certification and figured I might as well get that now instead of later when I really need it. They are only $120 from Summit (not in their catalog) and are chrome-plated too (not that I cared). On a stock or near-stock engine, you won't see any improvement unless yours has deteriorated (the rubber ring) and the outer ring has slipped (messing up the location of the timing mark).

As a side note, I think Lingenfelter uses the stock GM harmonic balancer on his 383's and 420's.
