TPI/Motor compatibity

Ok, I have a 350 thats just been sitting, and with the rain and spending a little money on it during the winter I thought why not, it would make a fun little project.

The motor is a 70 Chevelle 350, 4-bolt main.

Could I use the L98 cam, L98 heads, and TPI on this motor with out having any problems?

Ive got a free 89 V6, 5 speed Firebird coming soon, and the motor into this thing would be fun once I put something behind the motor than can handle the power.

You will run into problems with the L98 cam. It's a roller cam from a roller block. It will not work in the 70's block. You would need to get a retro fit kit to go with a roller cam $$$. Other than that, everything else should fit.

You can use all the L-98 parts on your 1970 engine but the cam is not a direct swap. The L-98 cam is a the newer style roller cam and you will have to buy some special parts to make it work in the 1970 engine. The choices you have are use a hydraulic flat tappet cam instead of the roller cam or buy the aftermarket hydraulic retro fit lifters, cam button, distributor gear that is compatable with the roller cam, and different push rods to work with the roller cam. All the other TPI parts should swap dirrectly to your 1970 engine.

Alright, thats pretty much what I figured, but I wanted to make sure. How much $$$ we talking for the retro fit kit for the cam? Cams are fairly cheap, so unless the kit is cheap Ill just do something else with the L98 cam, like make a keychain or something

Thanks for the quick reponses guys!

Well, the lifters alone start around $360.00. Pushrods come in about $50-$100 depening on maker. Add in accouple hundred for retainers, cam buttons, gears.......adds up fast.

You just need to ask yourself if it's worth it. I have got almost $700.00 into the roller cam/vavletrain for my 406. Still need a few things, but most of the pricey stuff has already been taken care of.

Why tpi and not an aftermarket FI system?--Holley, Edelbrock, others make them. Also, what about LT1 intake? It just seems kind of weird to put tpi on the motor when many people swap tpi for something else for performance gains. Also, Lingenfelter has a system that looks similar to the Holley system (and is actually less expensive).

Because basically Im on a budget for now. Eventually it would be upgraded. But, not at the moment. Especially since I have one just sitting here.
