Ive got a set of 601 heads with new seals, springs and milled .030,,,,, Ive also got a set of alum 113 heads oe with 95k miles on em. Ive heard the 601 will flow as good as the 113s, anyone know if thats true? Also do I need special valve seals if I have the valve guides machined down, the 601 heads have the slotted pushrod slots, can i use self aligning roller rockers on those? thanks alot guys..

the 601's are going to add a lot of compression to that motor so youd have to work those combustion chambers to make them work. the 601s stock are a little better than 081-083 heads suppossedly. as for 113 theyre proven decent performers. with the slotted holes in the 601s youre no suppossed to use self aligning rockers because they interfere but then remember gm used self aligning with pushrod slots and they worked fine so your choice really. as for valve seals i cant help you there.

I've never heard of 601 heads, but you can do a search of the TPI board for "L98 Corvette heads" and read the three problems I had with them when I ran them.

Re: which heads should I run on my 355
Ive read everything about the 113s I could find. I know about the egr,pre 87 bolt pattern, and the missing acc bolt. I couldnt find alot on the 601 heads.. 1 member said they out flow the 113s but I would think the 601s would flow less in stock form...1.84 opposed the 113s 1.94.. So if thats the case do you think I would get more power from the higher compression of the 601 or the better flow of the 113s?

i myself would go with the 113s but thats my opinion. the 601s are early 80s van heads i think and possibly monte carlos. FYI 601's are missing 2 accessory bolt holes on one of the heads it only has 1 hole but the other side will have all 3. forgot which side but they worked with the 1 for me with the serpentine belt setup. 601s are very heavy also. just things to keep in mind.

I don't know anything about the 601s, but the 113 don't flow great. The advantage is the weight savings, and the POTENTIAL, since the aluminum is a bit easier to port than our stockers. Flow really isn't great outta the box.

601s are 53 cc heads that came on 1981-1986 fullsize van, truck, suv 305. They were originally installed on a 305 to boost its compression ratio. It is a much better casting than the awful flowing, crack prone, 60cc 434 castings. The dished piston engines came with the peanut cam in them. The flattop piston version came with the standard "929" 350 camshaft in it. It was only available with a 4bbl on it. There were two versions. 165 HP/235 TQ and 180-190 HP/255 TQ.

The stock flow numbers on 601 heads are very good. I flowed a stock set of cleaned 601s with only 1.94/1.60 valves installed in them. Stock ports, stock chamber @ 28 in/h20 pressure drop.

Lift-----Intake---Exhaust
0.050-----32------21
0.100-----64------48
0.150-----94------70
0.200----119------85
0.250----137------98
0.300----160-----112
0.350----173-----120
0.400----185-----125
0.450----191-----129
0.500----201-----129

The other thing I love about them is the small closed chamber design like the old 462s with the more centrally located spark plug. It is very much Vortec 305 like in the chamber.

601 Chamber

059 Vortec Chamber

416 Chamber (Notice its very open like the smogger 882s)
