HELP!! Cooling Fans will not come on
I have an 87 Formula 350 and my cooling fans will not come on. I just recently purchased the car and it already had this problem. While installing a new radiator today, I checked both fans and they are fine, so what can it be?
Also, I don't know if this might have something to do with it, but the guy had a chip put in. I do not know if he put a 160 degree thermo in along woth the chip or if the chip calls for one. Could this have something to do with it?
WHat are the posibble problems?

no problem, this happend to my 87 iroc.
There is a faulty switch in the L98 that waers out real fast. It plugs into the engine. I had the shop fix it though.
The switch its self only cost 25.oo.
After I replaced everything worked great.

The cooling fans are kinda bizarre. The primary (drivers side) is completely ECM controlled. Should turn on when engine temp reaches 233 degrees. With an aftermarket chip, "on" temp may be lower. If the fan does not come on, but does indeed work, check with a scan tool, and see what the computer thinks engine temp is. If the temp sensor is accurate, prolly means the relay is bad.
The secondary fan has two possible "on" options. Engine temp over 238 degrees (this is the switch in the passenger side head) or, a/c on. Generally, if the secondary fan comes on, the primary should also. (the computer pays attention to the secondary fan, and if it sees that it is on, will also turn on primary)
I have been chasing cooling fan problems the last couple days. Such fun......
Good Luck.
