Knock Sens Q + Timing not advancing

First the Q.
Will a knock sens. pickup a small knock and retard the timing and put the car in (limp mode) without throwing a 43 code?

Heres my problem.
It seems that my advance is not working properly due to what reason im not sure but i think it could be detination which may cause the knock sensor to go off and all is due to bad egr valve? the problem is intermitant when the car is idleing in park around 900rpms. I suspect the egr because lately i have had a bit of surging while driving and also stalling. Also when i unplug the egr vacuum hose nothing really changes. When the car is put into drive and the rpm drops to 600-700 the motor shakes pretty good.. the passenger bank heats up way faster than the driverside bank also (i supose its running lean?) .

I have checked all the plugs, none seem to be fouled... yet still brown. also checked the compression in each cylinder for the heck of it.. everything fine. newer rebuilt motor.... 350tpi stock

trying to think what other info will be usefull...

i took off from a stop sign 1 block from my house... the car was running fine, i hit about 3500 and then the car just went dumby on me.

Im just not sure if the egr could really cause this much trouble... and dont want to just throw money at the car. I've half-*** tested the egr valve by taking off the hose and sucking on it, i could hear the diaphram go up and down and it also held. probably no 10lbs of vacuum but it seemed ok. my next move is to get a tester and test it... i just wanted to post here first for some ideas between the egr/knock sense or whatever else it might be

Re: Knock Sens Q + Timing not advancing

i think i might be having a similar problem, only my car is throwing code 42 at me... i thought it was the ignition module because when i tested it, the resistance was higher at the computer harness (white wire) than the new one. but when i changed the moduel last night, the code still came on.....

i know you're getting a different code, but it seems like we might have the same problem. when i drive on the highway for a while, my EGR valve code DOES come on also, and that's been happening for a while, i've just been ignoring it since i have a new EGR valve.

maxont, you sould like the car is running lean. I had this problem but I was getting the code 43. Turned out to be my MAF sensor was bad. Does it ping when you accelerate? If so, disconnect the MAF and try it again. If the pinging goes away, you have a bad MAF. You won't see any codes for the MAF or the mixture being lean. This problem threw me for a while. You might be at the beginning stages of the MAF going bad.

bigchief, You might have a plugged EGR passage in the intake or even a bad EGR solenoid. Try running the engine and openning the EGR valve with a vacuum pump. If idle changes, you might have a bad vacuum line or possibly a bad valve. If no change, the passages are clogged with carbon. Need to remove intake to clean out carbon all the way, or you could remove EGR valve and poke at it with a coat hanger and break it free.

,

I had the code 42. So I replaced the ignition module, than to find out it was my knock sensor. Just make sure the single wire is plugged into the knock sensor. I put it up on ramps to get to it easier took about 15mins. Runs great now . I have a 92' 25th anniversary rs

good idea man.. i'll check that out. when my code 42 comes on, the car runs alright, but has little power. the other day it warmed up for a while and then it ran fine w/ no code, performance increase was astronimical w/out the code 42
