Install fuel pump through tunk?

I have to replace my fuel pump in my 89 iroc. It has a full tank of gass (of course) In my 4th gen they cut an access hole in my trunk. I'm planning on doing this one myself. does any one know if you can cut an access in a 3rd gen? if so where exactly? What is the best way to close the access back up?

Wow

Cutting a hole in the rear deck of your car to change the pump.

Mman it gives me nightmares just thinking about it.

Cutting a hole right above a tank full of gas.....

I would get a few 5 gallon gas cans and one of the small pumps you can drive with a drill, and drain it manually. Then pull the tank the normal way.

If you're going to try it, the Pump should be dead center L-R and Frt-Back of the raised area on your rear deck. You'd have to cut about a 5 inch diameter hole and then I guess you'd have to fiberglass it back shut.

I think you'd be better off in the long run just doing it the normal way (get it up in the air, drop the exhaust, drop the rearend, and then drop the tank).

Gook Luck. Let us know how it goes.

Re: Install fuel pump through tunk?

Been done several times & actually safer on a full tank vs an almost empty. Think gas vapors. Vapors are what ignite & initiate combustion, not the solid liquid itself.

The hard part will be cutting the hard fuel lines, which are LONG before any connection, unlike 4th gens, which are short to reach a connection that can be disconnected.

After cutting the hard lines, you'll hafta reconnect the 2 tube ends with an appropriate rubber/flexible line between the two.
